Purpose

The Branch: Rural Development was founded on the National Development Plan 2030, Chapter 6: An Integrated and Inclusive Rural Economy. It exists to serve as a catalyst and to facilitate, coordinate, and oversee the implementation of the Integrated Rural Development Sector Strategy, Comprehensive Rural Development Programme, and other related policies, frameworks, and programmes.

Strategic Objective

Outcome 6 Integrated and Inclusive Rural Economy.

Sub-Programmes:

  1. National Rural Youth Service Corps (NARYSEC): Provides youth development and economic upliftment.
  2. Rural Infrastructure Development (RID): Facilitates infrastructure development in rural areas.
  3. Technology Research and Development (TRD): Develops and adapts innovative and appropriate technologies in rural areas.

Events

The minister of Land Reform and Rural Development, Mr Mzwanele Nyhontso, is to participate in the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM), in collaboration with the Government of Mexico, through Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (INEGI), will convene the 7th High-level Forum on United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management under the theme - “Accelerating Implementation: Achieving Resilience” in México City from 8 – 10 October 2024.

1. Provide national frameworks to promote sustainable household food security programmes
2. Develop and provide strategic support to farmers and cooperatives
3. Facilitate the provision of DALRRD education and Training in support of sustainable growth and equitable participation in the sector

5. Provide sound development finance services for development of DALRRD programmes
6. Facilitate the mainstreaming of rural women, youth, persons with disabilities  and  vulnerable groups (i.e. farm workers, communities. etc.)  in  Branch initiatives

About the Directorate

 

The Directorate regulates the manufacturing, distribution, importation, sale, use and advertisement of fertilizers, animal feeds, pesticides, stock remedies as well as the operation of sterilizing plants and pest control operators in terms of the Fertilizers, Farm Feeds, Agricultural Remedies and Stock Remedies Act, 1947 (Act No. 36 of 1947).

Principal responsibilities

The Directorate is responsible for:

Evaluating and registering fertilizers, animal feeds, pesticides and stock remedies for use in South Africa, having satisfied itself that such products are efficacious, and safe for humans, animals, crops and the environment;
Assessing the competency and registration of pest control operators (PCO);
Assessing the suitability and registration of sterilizing plants; and
Monitoring compliance with the legislation.
